Senior Backend & Platform Engineer
Would you like to join us in building the cloud & edge platform for real-world robotic systems?
Would you like to join us in building the cloud & edge platform for real-world robotic systems?
We are looking for a Senior Backend & Platform Engineer to become an integral part of revolutionizing the aquaculture industry. This is not a typical SaaS “business system” backend role. It’s product engineering, building software that connects real-world physical systems with robust, scalable cloud services.
About Biosort
At Biosort, we develop next-generation technology to protect farmed fish and provide deeper insight into growth, welfare, and health. With our unique FishID, we unlock a new understanding of fish, enabling aquaculture to operate with greater precision and sustainability. We build advanced sensor-driven systems that combine hardware, computer vision, real-time processing, and cloud infrastructure. We operate at the intersection of edge systems, robotics & sensing, cloud-native backend architecture, and high-throughput data pipelines.
Biosort was founded by former Tomra engineers, and today our team includes experienced specialists in aquaculture, software, machine vision, optics, and mechanical development.
The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Backend & Platform Engineer who will take ownership of our cloud and backend architecture, from core services to infrastructure decisions. This is a hands-on role with broad responsibility.
Design and implement backend services (primarily in Rust; Go experience is also highly relevant)
Build scalable microservices for cloud-based systems
Architect and optimize databases (Postgres and/or time-series databases)
Design secure authentication, authorization, and service-to-service communication
Deploy and operate services in a cloud environment (AWS, Azure, or similar). Kubernetes experience is highly beneficial
Contribute to infrastructure decisions (containers, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code concepts)
Work closely with computer vision, embedded, and edge teams to integrate end-to-end systems
Help shape engineering standards and architectural principles across the product
Because we are a small team, you won’t be confined to a narrow corner of the codebase. You will have visibility and influence across the full product stack, with meaningful ownership. Key aspects of the role include:
Building systems from the ground up and seeing them evolve in production
Influencing architectural direction and technical choices
Working across both cloud and edge systems — not just one isolated service
Having clear ownership and impact within a small, highly technical team
Who Are We Looking For?
We care about practical engineering ability and strong fundamentals.
1) Strong Computer Science Foundation
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or equivalent)
Solid understanding of system design, concurrency, distributed systems, and databases
Ability to explain the “why” behind architectural and performance choices
2) Senior Product Engineering Experience
6+ years of backend/platform engineering experience in production systems
Background in product-focused companies where you’ve seen systems built and maintained over time
Breadth of experience — you’ve owned more than a small, narrow subsystem
Consulting backgrounds can be relevant if you’ve had deep, end-to-end responsibility for substantial projects
Experience from engineering-heavy environments is an advantage, for example:
Sensor/robotics/edge-cloud product companies
Data-intensive platforms (e.g., digital twins, industrial data, video/image/signal pipelines)
Camera/sensor companies and real-time systems
3) Backend & Platform Depth
Rust: production experience preferred; serious hands-on experience required (work projects or substantial hobby projects)
OR strong Go/backend experience with clear willingness and ability to work in Rust
Databases: Postgres (or similar) and performance optimization; time-series experience is a plus
Microservices architecture and APIs
What Can We Offer?
At Biosort, you will gain real technical ownership and influence in a small, highly competent team. Your impact will be visible, and you will work closely with hardware, computer vision, and edge engineers. Key highlights include:
A highly competent and engaged team, supported by solid owners with a long-term perspective
Modern offices by the waterfront at Technopolis Fornebu, with a gym, canteen, coffee bar, KIWI supermarket, and excellent shared facilities
Competitive compensation, including salary, bonus scheme, and stock option program
Comprehensive insurance and pension schemes
A work culture characterized by openness, trust, and ambition
